Move Through What is Holding You Back

EMDR Therapy in Raleigh NC

Evidence-based.

Nervous-system-paced.

You know the moment. A smell, a tone of voice, or an offhand comment and your body reacts like it’s years ago. You know it’s out of proportion. It happens anyway.

When something overwhelming happens, your brain doesn’t always file it away properly. The memory can stay “live,” stored in the emotional part of the brain as if it’s still happening. That’s what people mean when they say they’ve been triggered. Two things can be true at the same time: it happened a long time ago, and your body still reacts like it’s happening now.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy developed by psychologist Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s. While you bring a memory to mind, we use bilateral stimulation, such as side-to-side eye movements, tapping, or alternating tones. The goal is to help your brain and body process the memory so it feels like something that happened, not something still happening. You don’t have to relive it in detail to do this work, EMDR works with your nervous system's natural ability to heal and orient to the present.

What to Expect in an EMDR Session

The goal of EMDR is not to forget what happened. The memory stays — but the emotional charge around it fades.

Why EMDR with me

I’m a licensed clinical mental health counselor, trained in EMDR through EMDRIA, with more than 10 years of experience as a therapist. EMDR may help if you’re a mom who snaps at the people you love and can’t explain why, or a partner whose old hurts keep showing up in your relationship. Or an event or dynamic has held an emotional charge you’re ready to get space from.

My style is warm and direct. I’ll explain what we’re doing and why, we’ll go at a pace your nervous system can handle, and you stay in control of the process.
